FAQs
What do I do in case of an auto loss?
If you’re involved in an accident:
- Ensure everyone is safe. Call 911 if there are injuries or significant damages.
- Move to safety if possible and exchange information with all involved drivers.
- Document the scene. Take photos of the vehicles, damage, and any relevant details (license plates, road conditions etc.).
- File a police report if required in your area (often mandatory if damage exceeds $2,000 or involves injuries).
- Contact your insurance provider directly to begin the claims process (see contact list below).
What do I do in case of a property loss (home, condo, tenant, or commercial property)?
- Make sure everyone is safe. If needed, call 911 for assistance.
- Take steps to prevent further damage — if it is safe to do so. This might include turning off the water, covering broken windows, or securing the property.
- Document everything. Take photos or video of the damage before cleaning or starting repairs.
- Do not discard damaged items unless they pose a safety risk — your insurer may need to assess them.
- Contact your insurance provider as soon as possible to report the loss and begin the claims process (see contact list below).
- Keep receipts for any emergeny repairs or accomodations (like a hotel stay) — these may be reimbursable under your policy.
Should I make a claim?
- Repair Costs Vs. Deductible: If the cost of repairs is close to or less than your deductible, it may not be worth filing.
- Impact on Premiums: Submitting a claim could affect your future insurance rates.
- Minor Losses: For small losses, it might be more cost-effective to pay out-of-pocket.
- If you’re uncertain, don’t hesitate to reach out to your broker. Many insurers also offer claims counselling — they can help you determine whether filing a claim is in your best interest.
What information should I have ready before calling my insurer?
When you call, it helps to have the following information on hand:
- Your policy number (if available).
- Date and time of the incident.
- Details of what happened.
- Names and contact information of any involved parties or witnesses.
- Any police report number (if one was filed).
- Photos or video of the damage, if possible.
What happens after I file a claim?
Once the claim is submitted:
- A claims adjuster will be signed to your case.
- They may reach out for additional details, photos, or documentation.
- The adjuster will help assess the damage and determine what is covered.
- Your insurer will guide you through the repair or reimbursement process and provide updates along the way.
Can I still talk to my broker for advice?
Absolutely. While your insurance company will handle the claim directly, we are still here to support you. If you have general questions or need help understanding your policy, don’t hesitate to reach out. Our job is to make sure you feel informed and cared for.
